Didn't know if I should place this in the motherboard forum, or here, but I decided to place it here. I've been trying to narrow down some AM3 motherboard choices & I have a question about onboard audio. I'm just wondering if there is a noticeable difference between VIA VT1708S and Realtek ALC892. Is one better than the other? I'll be using headphones & listening to music (no gaming) if that makes any difference. I would appreciate any info. Thanks! :)

ps - the headphones I'll be using are the recommended "budget" headphones (I found from reading various audio forums). So nothing really fancy/expensive here. The headphones are Sennheiser HD 202.

I have a Logitech Z5500 system and like it but for a different project I'm looking for digital input without the price of the Z5500 setup.

In my basement office is my server, my normal PC and the work laptop (I work from home quite a bit). I like to watch/listen to stuff while working.

I recently put a Samsung 2370HD monitor on the Server and it can play movies etc from the server and Satellite TV via the HD DVR (uses the Whole Home feature via SWM) the later connection is via HDMI, the server video output is via DVI from a GTX 275 (haven't tried HDMI only one HDMI input on the TV) and sound from the on-board via an ancient Logitech Z540. I'm very happy with the setup - except the sound from the 2370HD.

I did try getting a line level sound input for the PC sound from the HD DVR or the back of the 2370 (it has Optical out out and headphone out) but the volume level was very low compared to line out out.

The obvious solution is to swap the Z540 and Z5500 systems and use optical for the HD DVR and Digital Coax for the PC, but that downgrades my other PC sound system.

So my project quest is to find an alternative (low cost) set of speakers that has selective optical / coax digital in.

I also have 2 Sony 5.1 receivers (non HDMI) that could be pressed into service but thats more bulk and remotes /speakers.

I've been looking around for alternative digital input systems but do far without much luck.

Any ideas?

I'm overspent on the kitchen project, but have not yet delivered PC sound in the (large) kitchen / dining area, so I'm trying to use the stuff I have laying around. Its so she can listen to Internet radio from Blighty.

The house has LAN and WiFi.

I have an HDTV coming in a few days (thanks to air miles) and a couple of Sony AV receivers (non HDMI) and will have a direct TV receiver (with HDMI) box. My challenge is to get Internet radio sound from the wifes PC or other source, into the kitchen either directly to speakers or via the AV receiver.

I can run wires from the PC to the speaker / receiver location but its about 15-20 ft after I run under the floor between rooms.

I posted a question in the Motherboard forum about using digital and analog outputs at the same time http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=472708
but I thought you guys may have a few other ideas.

Pops and other issues in Win7

Maybe I just haven't noticed it before, maybe its new, but I'm having a few audio issues in windows 7 that are driving me absolutely nuts.

Number 1 is this popping sound whenever a sound plays in windows. Background alert sounds are the most irritating (like from chat windows and such) because it pops every time a sound plays. Turning off chat sounds is not a solution, its not their fault because its every sound. The pop can most directly be described as sounding like the popping noise you get when you unplug your headphones while the computer is running.

Number 2 is a that there is a delay between a sound starting and it actually playing over the speakers. Its like i'm not hearing the full length of the audio clip. if the sound is a little musical crescendo then I don't hear any actual audio until after the crescendo starts. its like theres a little delay between when the signal comes in and the time audio is actually output.

My hypothesis is this: that windows 7 is shutting off the audio link when theres no audio playing, and turns it on again when a sound comes in. I dont know why this is desireable behavior since it introduces an incredibly annoying delay and a grating POP sound every time a sounds plays. The pop sounds like its coming from the link powering on and then theres a pop at the end of the sound like its powering off. There are no pops or hisses or crackles when audio is going full time (like for a movie or music). I have also noticed behavior similar to this for another computer with a totally different audio setup.

Any advice?
